Herbert named SCAC Pitcher-of-the-Week
Centre College junior pitcher John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 5 through Sunday, March 11.
Herbert had an outstanding week on the mound for the Colonels, allowing only one earned run in 14.2 innings, while limiting opponents to only nine hits. He struck out 10 and allowed only one walk, with opponents hitting just .161 against him, while posting a 0.61 ERA for the week.
Herbert was the tough-luck loser in the Colonels' 4-3 loss to Maryville (Tenn.), despite allowing only one earned run in 6.2 innings. If not for five Centre errors, including two in the final inning, Herbert would have earned two wins on the week.
Five days later, the junior combined with sophomore Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) for the Colonels' second shutout of the season, a 9-0 win over Ohio Northern. Herbert hurled 8.0 shutout innings giving up only two hits, while striking out six and walking only one.
On the season, Herbert is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA (fifth in the SCAC) in 21.2 innings. Opponents are hitting only .216 (sixth in the SCAC) off him as he has struck out 14 and walked only two.
Herbert is the second Centre pitcher this season to be recognized by the SCAC. Freshman Justin Basham (Bowling Green, Ky.) was also named the SCAC's Pitcher-of-the-Week in week 3. He is now only the fourth pitcher in school history to earn the honor and only the second since the 2001 season.
Centre, now 6-3 on the year, will host Maryville College in a doubleheader, Wednesday, March 14. The non-conference twin-bill is set to start at 4:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
