Centre finishes road trip on 4-0 winning streak
The Centre baseball team finished it's weeklong road trip when it played SCAC rival Oglethorpe University in the last of a four game series on Sunday, March 25 at Anderson Field in Atlanta, Georgia. The Colonels, now 4-0 in conference play, defeated the Stormy Petrels 15-9.
Centre continued it's hard hitting and jumped out to an early lead on Oglethorpe as it drove in two runs in the opening inning. Sophomore Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) sent sophomore Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) home while senior Kyle Rakes (Ashland, Ky.) drove in junior Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio). Oglethorpe attempted to keep the game close and brought in one run in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1.
Centre was determined to take the series however, and proved it to Oglethorpe in the top of the third, when it drove in seven runs to make the score 9-1 early in the game. Centre had the bases loaded and scored two of it's runs when the Oglethorpe pitcher walked and hit two batters. Junior Kevin McGee (Louisville, Ky.) singled to get Jones home and freshmen Kai Leathers (Franklin, Ky.) also singled to get Rakes home. Kull then drove in Rosen and Williams batted home junior Kevin McGee (Louisville, Ky.). Jeffers ended the scoring after he doubled to get Williams in.
Oglethorpe showed some offensive talent in the next few innings as it matched Centre in the fifth in sixth innings when both teams drove in two runs. Centre brought in its final two runs in the top of the eighth. Oglethorpe rallied too little too late when it brought in three runs in the ninth inning to finish the game 15-9.
Senior Andy Placido (Nicholasville, Ky.) started and earned the win for the Colonels as he pitched the first six innings. He allowed six runs off six hits and had seven strikeouts. He was replaced by freshmen Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) who allowed three runs off four hits and came away with one strikeout.
Eight different Centre players had hits in the game. Leathers led the pack with four hits while Jeffers was right behind him with three. Jeffers also batted three runners in. Williams, Moore and Rakes each batted in two runners.
Centre, 10-9 (4-0 SCAC), will return home to play more conference games starting Friday, March 30 when they take on Rhodes College at home in Danville, Ky starting at 7:00pm.
