Rakes becomes fourth Centre player chosen by SCAC
Centre College senior outfielder Kyle Rakes (Ashland, Ky.) has become the fourth Centre baseball player this year to be honored with a weekly award from Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), as he has been selected the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, April 9 through Sunday, April 15.
Rakes had an almost perfect week for the Colonels, hitting .900 (9-10) in helping Centre to a 3-1 record, including three SCAC wins against Sewanee. The senior outfielder scored five runs and drove in 12 on the week, including seven in the Colonel's 21-11 win over Sewanee in the first game Saturday.
In that same game, he was perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a three-run home run to right field, his first home run of his career. Along with his home run, Rakes added three doubles, a walk and a sacrifice bunt while stealing a base in his only attempt. Rakes had a 1.500 slugging percentage and a .909 on-base percentage and did not make an error in six chances.
For the season, he is hitting .313 in 31 games with 21 runs and 21 runs driven in. Among his 31 hits, he has eight doubles and a home run.
Rakes joins senior Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.), junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Justin Basham (Bowling Green, Ky.) as having been chosen by the league for a weekly honor.
The Colonels four selections this year are the most in one season in the 16-year history of the SCAC. The previous high of three selections was during the 1998 season when Jeff Floyd, Ryan Grimm and Drew Briese were selected.
Centre will return to action Friday, April 20 when it travels to Millington, Tenn. to play in the 2007 SCAC Divisional Baseball Tournament. The Colonels, which have qualified for the conference tournament for the first time since 1999, will square off against Austin College in a best of three series Friday through Sunday. The first game of the series is set for 11 a.m. on Friday. |
