Centre beat University of the South
The Centre College baseball team hosted the University of the South this weekend. The Colonels started the series on Friday, April 13 and played a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14. The final game of the series was canceled due to poor weather conditions. The Colonels broke their losing streak as they won all three games.
Centre dominated the first game as they posted 20 runs and held Sewanee to three. The Colonels scored multiple runs in each inning except for the sixth. Centre brought in three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. The bottom of the second was a big inning for the Colonels as they brought in seven runs to make the score 10-0. Sewanee scored one run in the top of the third but had no hope of coming back as Centre then scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Centre scored four runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to make its final tally 20.
Junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win for the Colonels as he started and pitched six innings. He allowed three runs off nine hits and struck out three batters. Freshmen Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) came in as replacement for the final inning. He allowed no runs and only one hit.
Ten Centre players had hits throughout the game. Junior Kevin McGee (Louisville, Ky.) led the group by batting in four runners. He was followed by seniors Kyle Rakes (Ashland, Ky.) and Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.) who each batted in three runners.
Centre started off the next day in a similar fashion as it brought in 21. The Colonels gave up 11 runs in the game but were never threatened by Sewanee, as they held the lead the whole game.
Seven out of the eight Centre batters posted a multiple hit game. Rakes and
sophomore Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.) both had four hits. Rakes also drove in seven runs. Others who drove in multiple runners were Rosen and junior Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio), each batting in three runners.
Senior Lance Sizmore (Batavia, Ohio) pitched and earned the win for the Colonels. He pitched the first five innings and allowed seven runs off seven hits and struck one batter out. He was replaced by A. Herbert in the sixth. Herbert allowed four runs off three hits and also struck out one player.
The Colonels stepped up their defense for the second match of the day and gave up only one run. Their offense was stayed focused as they brought in 17 runs. Centre held the lead the entire game and scored 12 runs in the first three innings. Sophomore Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) hit his third home run of the season. With a comfortable lead the Colonels seemed to relax. They scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and then brought in the final four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Ten Centre players had hits in the game. Moore, Rakes and senior Andy Placido (Nicholasville, Ky.) all had multiple hits. Moore led the team by batting in five runs. Five other players batted in two runs.
Senior Johnny Karnes (Labanon, Ohio) pitched the whole game for the Colonels. He allowed one run off six hits and struck out two batters.
The final game of the series was canceled due to bad weather conditions.
Centre, 14-19 (7-8 SCAC), travel to the University of the Cumberlands Tuesday, April 17 to play a single game starting at 3:30pm.
