Centre beats Thomas Moore College

The Centre College baseball team defeated Thomas Moore College at Wright Field in Danville, Ky. Sunday, April 29. After losing to Thomas Moore earlier in the season, the Colonels were able to take this game by beating Saints 8-2.

The game began when the Saints scored two runs in the opening inning to put the Colonels behind early. This was the only only time the Saints would be allowed to post runs the rest of the game. Centre took the lead in the bottom of the third by bringing in four runs. Senior Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.) singled to left field driving sophomore Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) home for the first run. Junior Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio) was forced home after senior Kyle Rakes (Ashland, Ky.) was walked. Junior Kevin McGee (Louisville, Ky.) drove in Moore and sophomore Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) on his deep single to left field. Centre, now leading 4-2, brought in four more runs in the next inning to secure their lead. Jones drove Williams in for the fifth run of the game for the Colonels. Next, Rakes hit his second home run of the year, driving in Moore and Jones, to get Centre's score to 8. Centre then shutout Thomas Moore the remainder of the game.

Junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win for the Colonels as he pitched the whole game. He allowed two runs off seven hits. Herbert leads all pitchers on the team with 49 strikeouts. He struck out six players this game, showing why he has earned this spot.

The Centre batting was in top form as eight players had hits during the game. Williams and Jones led the team with multiple hits while Rakes drove in four runners in the game.

Centre, 16-23, will travel to play local rival Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. Wednesday, May 2. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
