Centre drops game to Transylvania University
The Centre College baseball team traveled to Lexington, Kentucky to face off against Transylvania University, Wednesday, May 2 at Applebees Park. It was a long and close game but Transy won, bringing in four late runs to put Centre behind.
Transy was the first to score and brought in one run in the bottom of the second. The Colonels remained silent most of the game, unable to get any runs. Transy doubled its lead in the bottom of the fifth by bringing in one more run. Centre finally answered in the top of the seventh when junior Kevin McGee (Louisville, Ky.) laced one to center field to drive home sophomore Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.). Transy brought in a run in the bottom of the inning to maintain their lead. Centre pushed again in attempts to tie the game in the top of the eighth by bringing in two runs. Senior Any Placido (Nicholasville, Ky.) and junior Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio) made it back to the home plate. The game was only tied for a moment, as Transy took the lead in its next at-bat. It brought in four runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring its lead up to four. In their last attempt to save the game, the Colonels were only able to bring in two runs before being stopped by the Transy defense. Jeffers drove in the last two runs after doubling to left field, bringing McGee and freshmen Kai Leathers (Franklin, Ky.). The game ended 7-5 in Transylvania's favor.
Placido started on the mound for the Colonels. He pitched six innings before he was replaced by junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.). Placido allowed three runs off seven hits and struck out two batters. Herbert allowed four runs off three hits.
Five Centre batters recorded hits in the game. Jeffers led the squad by having multiple hits and RBI's. Seniors Kyle Rakes (Ashland, Ky.) and Placido also had two hits in the game
Centre, 16-24, will finish up the 2007 season by hosting Franklin College in a doubleheader series on Saturday, May 5 at Wright Field in Danville, Ky. starting at 1:00 p.m. |
