Centre drops game to Transylvania University
The Centre College baseball team played local rival Transylvania University Wednesday, April 25 at Wright Field in Danville, Ky. The Colonels had a slow start but scored eight runs in the last three innings in attempts to catch Transy. The final score was 19-10.
The Colonels gave up 12 runs in the first two innings of the game without bringing one in themselves. They got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when senior Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.) homered to get their tally to 2. Transy went on a scoring streak in the next four innings bringing in eight runs to increase the lead and finish scoring. The Colonels then began to take on the task of fighting in uphill battle as they tried to tie they game. They brought in two runs in the bottom of the seventh and six in the bottom of the ninth to bring the final score to 19-10.
Centre had four different pitchers on the mound throughout the game. Junior Jarrod Williams (Carrollton, Ky.) started and pitched the opening inning and a half. He had one strikeout and allowed eight runs off 11 hits. He was replaced by senior Johnny Karnes (Labanon, Ohio) in the second. Karnes allowed five runs off seven hits and came away with three strikeouts. Freshmen Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) then came in as relief in the sixth. He allowed three runs off four hits and struck out three batters. His brother, junior John Herbert (Louisville, Ky) finished the game. J. Herbert allowed no hits and struck out two batters.
Eight Centre batters had hits in the game. Moore lead the team with the most hits, four, accompanied by one RBI. Sophomore Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.) also had a productive batting day as he had three hits and drove in two runs.
Centre,15-23, will play Thomas More College at Wright Field in Danville, Ky Friday, April 29 starting at noon.
