Centre baseball loses series to Birmingham Southern College


The Centre College Colonel baseball team dropped its last three games to former NCAA Division I Birmingham Southern College to lose the four game series 1-3. The team will next travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take on the Emory Eagles on Wednesday, March 19.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A six-run third inning blew open a 2-1 game as Birmingham-Southern went on to capture a 13-3 win over Centre College here Monday at Striplin Field.

The win gave BSC a 3-1 win in the four-game series while improving to 10-8 overall on the season. Centre College fell to 7-5 overall

Birmingham-Southern took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Drew Leachman was hit by a pitch and scored on a Bryan Higginbotham ground out. Sam Hill singled and scored on a Reed Tuttle single.

Centre plated a run in the second to cut the deficit to 2-1 before the six-run third put BSC in control. The Panthers scored six runs on four this and took advantage one Centre error.  Darby Weppner had a two-run double and Leachman singled in two more runs to highlight the inning.

BSC went on to scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game due to the NCAA 10-run rule.  A Higginbotham single drove in two runs in the sixth. Hill had an RBI single and Kyle Mayes had a pinch-hit two run single in the seventh.

Anthony Bianchi, 1-0, pitched six innings with three strikeouts while giving up two runs on seven hits. Jake Jones, 1-1, started for Centre and took the loss allowing eight runs on 10 hits with one strikeout in four innings.
