Six run fifth lifts Colonels over Tigers
The Centre College baseball team pounded out 13 runs on 19 hits on their way to a 13-5 victory over conference rival DePauw University on Friday, March 28 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 10-7 on the year, 2-3 in SCAC play. The loss is the first conference loss of the season for the Tigers, and puts them at 17-5 overall, 4-1 in the SCAC.
The bats were hot early, as both teams scored in the first and second innings. DePauw got on the board first against Centre starter John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) when following a single and a pair of walks, Adam Ford drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Centre would answer in the bottom half of the inning as junior Jeffery Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. An RBI single by Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio) would score Williams to tie the score at one.
Each team added a run in the second, and Depauw scored again in the third and fifth to take a 4-2 lead. However, the lead was not enough as Centre's offense would explode for six runs in the fifth inning to put the Colonels up 8-4. The inning consisted of five hits for the Colonels, along with a walk and a DePauw error.
Centre added three in the sixth and a pair of runs in the eighth to finish the game with 13 runs and 19 hits. Jeffers led the way for the Colonels going 4-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in three. Williams and sophomore Steven Kull (Frankfort, Ky.) had three hits apiece and Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.), Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.), and John Starks (Russellville, Ky.) all had multi-hit games.
After a shaky start, Herbert settled down on the mound for the Colonels and recorded the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. Herbert threw his fourth consecutive complete game, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits while striking out eight and walking three.
Jeremy Alland suffered the loss for DePauw, dropping his record to 2-2 on the season. Alland went five innings, allowing 11 runs, all earned, on 14 hits while striking out three and walking two.
Depauw's offense was led by Ford who went 2-4 with a double, scored a run, and drove in three. Mike Stout and Jack Gavin each recorded two hits for DePauw as well.
Centre returns to action with a double-header against DePauw Saturday, March 29 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 pm.
