Centre's Herbert named SCAC Pitcher of the Week
Centre College senior right-handed pitcher John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, March 3 through Sunday, March 9 after throwing his second career nine-inning complete game in a 4-2 win over Maryville College Wednesday, March 5.
Herbert, who recorded a nine-inning complete game victory over Thomas More College April 29, 2007, allowed only four hits, and two runs - only one earned - while recording his second straight double-digit strike-out effort as he mowed down 10 Scots.
Herbert's 10 strikeouts against the defending Great South Conference champions Maryville, follow a 13 strikeout performance against Asbury College a week earlier.
The win was Herbert's first of the season after picking up two no-decisions in his first two starts. It also sets a Centre career record (SCAC-era only) for wins with 17.
The senior hurler currently owns a 2.45 earned run average (10th in the SCAC) in 22.0 innings and has struck out 28 (tied for third in the SCAC) while allowing teams to hit only .247 against him. The honor is the second of his career as he was also named the SCAC's Pitcher of the Week during week five last year.
Centre, now 5-1 on the season, will play Hanover College in a doubleheader Wednesday, March 12 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky. |
