SCAC selects Herbert for second weekly honor
For the second time this season, Centre College senior right-handed pitcher John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week, this time for games played from Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.
Herbert came up big once again for the Colonels starting both ends of a doubleheader sweep against conference foe Oglethorpe University Saturday, April 5 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
The senior hurler tossed a two-hit complete game in the 3-1 series opener, allowing one unearned run for his fifth complete game of the season. He then started game two and threw two scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out the side in his final inning of the day in an 8-6 win.
His seven strikeouts on the day gave him 67 for the season (tied for second in the SCAC) in only 58.0 innings of work and tied a Centre single season record for strikeouts. Herbert also lowered his team-leading ERA from 2.20 to 1.86 (second in the SCAC) in not allowing an earned run in nine-innings of work. He is now 5-0 (tied for fifth in wins in the SCAC) on the season in eight outings.
The senior co-captain was also named the league's top pitcher following week five, when he threw a nine-inning complete game in a 4-2 win over Maryville College.
Centre, now 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the SCAC, will travel to Sewanee, Tenn. Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13 for a four-game series against Sewanee-The University of the South. Saturday's doubleheader is set to start at 12 p.m.
