Centre Baseball wins two against Maryville, pick up season sweep
With their two wins (3-0, and 12-4) on Saturday, March 22 against the Maryville College Scots the Centre College baseball team improves to 9-6 overall and takes a clean sweep for the season against Maryville.

Centre sweeps season series from Scots

MC Sports Information
The Maryville College diamondmen dropped a double header to Centre College by the scores of 3-0 and 12-4 on Saturday afternoon at MC's Scotland Yard. The Scots fell earlier in the season to the Colonels in Danville 4-2.

In game one, Centre hurler John Herbert shut out the Scots allowing only four hits in a complete game effort. Herbert (2-0) earned the victory against MC earlier in the season. MC senior Zach Smigiel (2-3) surrendered only a pair of earned runs while striking out six. Smigiel pitched out of two bases loaded situations in the first and third innings allowing only a run in each visitor at-bat. The Colonels tacked on an unearned insurance run in the sixth to secure the 3-0 victory. MC's Zac Hargett, hitting .403 in his first season as a Scot, recorded two of the Scots four hits.

Game two featured another stellar pitching performance. Centre's Jake Jones tossed six complete innings, scattering five hits, and allowing only one earned run. He struck out four while earning his second win of the season. Matt Johnson (2-3) suffered the loss for Maryville. Kevin Newton, Zac Hargett, and Ben Peters each had a pair of hits. The trio supported MC's eight hits attack. Centre (9-6) had a 3-for-5 performance from Jeffrey Williams to spark their 12 hit attack. Williams, Steven Proctor, Jose Ordonez, and Steven Kull each drove in a pair of runs to assist in the 12-4 win.

Maryville (9-14) will travel Tuesday to Sewanee, Tennessee to challenge the University of the South.

Centre now 9-7 will return to action Tuesday, March 25 when it they travel to Thomas More College in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
