Herbert hurls Colonels to 4-2 win over Maryville
Senior pitcher John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) recorded his second straight double-digit strike-out effort and limited Maryville College to only two runs on four hits as the Centre College baseball team earned a 4-2 win over the Scots Wednesday, March 5 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
After dropping a disappointing 10-inning game 9-8 to DePauw three days earlier, the Colonels bounced back with the win to improve to 5-1 on the season. The loss drops Maryville to 3-10 in the early going.
Centre jumped on the scoreboard first with a bases loaded walk to senior outfielder Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio) to plate freshman first baseman Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.) for a 1-0 lead.
The Colonels put up two more runs in the third inning when senior catcher Kevin McGee (Louisville, Ky.) hit a two-out, two-run single to right field to give Centre a 3-0 advantage.
Maryville answered in the fourth. Following a lead-off walk and an error by Herbert, the Scots got a run-scoring single from Jason Lambert to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the fifth, freshman shortstop Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) led off the inning with a double down the left field line, just past the reach of the Maryville third baseman. Crowdis moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Proctor's second hit of the game to give Centre a 4-1 lead.
The Scots scored a run in the ninth and had runners on second and third with two outs, but Herbert struck out Maryville pinch hitter Justin Ghorley to end the game.
Herbert finished the game with 10 strikeouts after tallying 13 against Asbury in his previous start. The senior right-hander completed only his second nine-inning game of his career and allowed only one earned run in the victory.
Proctor finished with a perfect day at the plate going three for three with two runs scored and another driven in. Junior third baseman Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) also recorded multiple hits going two for four.
Riley Finch took the loss for Maryville throwing two innings and allowing one run. He struck out three and walked three while allowing two hits.
First baseman Ben Peters led the Scots at the plate going two for four with a double and a run scored.
Centre will return to action Friday, March 7 when it hosts Defiance College in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky. |
