Baseball News

After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, and trailing 6-5 after two , the Centre College baseball team rallied to win 13-7 over Monmouth College Sunday, March 2 at Gary Wright Field in Danville , Ky.

With the win, the Colonels remain undefeated at 4-0, while Monmouth takes the loss in their first game of the season, going to 0-1.

The Fighting Scots opened the scoring early on, putting up two runs in the first inning. After freshman pitcher Andrew Hagerman (Lexington , Ky.) walked the first two hitters of the game, he allowed a pair of singles and the Colonels made an error allowing the Scots to take a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning.

The Colonels did not waste any time responding with runs of their own. Following a single by senior Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio) and a walk, junior outfielder Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.) connected for a three-run homerun, his first of the season, to put Centre ahead 3-2.

Both teams continued their offensive production in the second inning. The Fighting Scots added four runs in the top half of the inning but the Colonels would respond. Sophomore Steven Kull (Frankfort , Ky.) doubled and was driven in on a single by Jeffers. Junior Jake Jones added an RBI double of his own to score Jeffers and cut the lead to 6-5.

After a scoreless third inning for Monmouth, Centre kept up the offensive production. Freshman Steven Proctor (Springfield , Ga.) started the inning with a single, which was followed by a walk to sophomore Derrick Shepherd (Gray Hawk, Ky.). Kull followed with an RBI double, his second double of the game. Junior Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville , Tenn.) then grounded out to drive in Shepherd from third, putting the Colonels ahead 6-5. Finally, Jones would single to drive in the third Colonel run of the inning, putting Centre up 7-5.

After a scoreless fourth, the Colonels bats were not done. The Colonels added four runs in the fifth on a Jones homerun and a single by Proctor to drive in two. Centre added one more in the sixth when Kull hit his first career homerun.

After a shaky start, Hagerman would settle down and collect his first career win, giving up no runs in his final four innings. Hagerman went six innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs and striking out three. Sophomore Aaron Herbert (Louisville , Ky.) relieved Hagerman and picked up the save. Herbert allowed one run in the seventh, but held the Scots scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings.

Jones, Jeffers, and Kull each finished the game with three hits and Rosen had added two of his own. Kull ended the game 3-5 with two doubles and a homerun. Jones finished 3-6 with a double and a homerun and five runs batted in.

Drew Johnson suffered the loss for Monmouth, throwing four innings allowing eight runs – five earned – on ten hits. He struck out four and walked four.

Third baseman Ryan Stubler was the lone Scot with multiple hits, which included a grand slam in the second inning. Stubler was two for three and finished with four driven in.

Centre returns to action this evening for their second game of the day as they host Depauw at Gary Wright Field in Danville , Ky.
