Colonels suffer loss to Thomas More College

After a slow start in which Centre allowed seven runs in the top of the first, the Centre College baseball team lost 17-8 to Thomas More College Tuesday, April 15 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.

The loss puts the Colonels at 17-14 on the year. The Saints improve to 14-6 with the win, and sweep the season series 2-0.

Thomas More jumped ahead in the first, putting up seven runs on Centre starting pitcher Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) highlighted by a two-run home run by Brad Ketterer.

Centre responded with runs of their own in the first and second innings to cut into the lead. After a walk to Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.) and a single by Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio), Jake Jones singled to drive in two and cut the lead to 7-2.

After freshman pitcher Andy Hagerman relieved Williams and pitched a scoreless second inning, the Colonels added two more. Derrick Shepherd (Gray Hawk, Ky.) started the inning with a walk, and Steven Kull (Frankfort, Ky.) followed with a single. Proctor drove in Shepherd with a single, then Jeffers hit a sacrifice fly to score Kull and cut the score to 7-4.

Thomas More added a run in the fourth on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to extend the lead, but Centre put up a big inning of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning to tie the game. Kull started the inning with a double and scored on a single by Proctor. Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.) later followed with an RBI single of his own, then freshman Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) doubled to drive in two and tie the game 8-8.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Saints went ahead with three runs in the sixth, then added six more runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

Hagerman suffered the loss for the Colonels after coming in relief for Williams. Hagerman pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs, three earned, while walking two and striking out two. Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) relieved Hagerman with one out in the eighth inning and allowed three runs on five hits. Kull finished the game for Centre, throwing a perfect ninth inning and striking out one in his first career appearance on the mound.

Centre pounded out 14 hits in the loss, and four Colonels had multiple hit games. Rosen led the way, going 3-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Proctor, Jeffers, and Kull also had two hits apiece and all three scored two runs.

Chris Simon picked up the win for the Saints after working 4.1 scoreless innings of relief. Simon allowed three hits, struck out one and walked two in his appearance.

The Saints put up 19 hits in the game, led by Chris Fishburn who went 4-5 at the plate with four runs batted in. Brad Ketterer added two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs in the win.

Centre is scheduled to return to action Friday, April 16 as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to meet Southwestern University in a best of three series in the SCAC Cross Divisional tournament. First pitch for game one is set for 8 pm at USA Stadium in Memphis.
