Baseball falls 10-3 to Thomas More
The Centre College baseball team suffered their fifth loss in the last seven games falling 10-3 to Thomas More Tuesday, March 25 at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Ky. The loss drops the Colonels to 9-7 on the year while the Saints improve to 2-5.
Thomas More jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the first and the third innings off Centre pitcher Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.). The Saints added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two run homerun by DH Brad Ketterer to go ahead 4-0.
The Colonels got on the board for the first time in the sixth inning following a single and stolen base by Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.) and an RBI double by Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.). However, the Saints responded with a run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh on a homerun by Spencer Franzreb to put the game out of reach.
Herbert suffered the loss for the Colonels, allowing five runs, four earned, in six innings of work. He was relieved by freshman Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) who went two innings, allowing five runs.
Senior Matt Koopman recorded the victory for the Saints. Koopman pitched five shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven. Pat Berndsen threw the final four innings and picked up the save.
Centre did have ten hits in the game, led by Jones who had a double and two RBI. Ben Jeffers (New Albany, Ohio), Brandon Rosen (Ashland, Ky.), and Proctor also added two hits apiece for the Colonels.
Ketterer led the way on offense for the Saints with four hits, including a double and a homerun. Mark Price and Michael Browne each added two hits.
Centre will look to bounce back as they return to action against DePauw in a four game conference series over the weekend. Game one is scheduled for Friday, March 28 with first pitch set for 7 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
