Colonels fall 7-1, split season series with Pioneers
The Centre College baseball team was unable to get anything going offensively as they fell 7-1 to cross town rival Transylvania University Wednesday, April 30 at Applebee's Park in Lexington, Ky.
The Colonels fall to 18-17 on the year with the loss and split the season series with the Pioneers 1-1. Transylvania improves to 26-9 with the win.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Pioneers put up two runs on starting pitcher Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) on a pair of two out hits to go ahead 2-0.
Transylvania added two more in the sixth on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. The four runs would be more than enough for the Pioneer pitching staff as a total of eight pitchers allowed only one run over the course of the game.
Centre got its lone run in the eighth inning when freshman Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.) scored after hitting a single to start the inning. Transylvania would add three more in the eighth with three hits and the help of two Centre errors to put the game away 7-1.
Jones suffered the loss for the Colonels and fell to 4-4 on the season, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two. Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) relieved Jones and worked two innings allowing three runs, no earned runs, on five hits. John Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the final two outs of the eighth inning for the Colonels allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one.
Junior Jeffrey Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Proctor were the only Colonels with multiple hits on the day. Williams went 2-5 and Proctor was 2-3 with a run scored.
Nick Lawson picked up his first win of the year for the Pioneers in relief in the third inning, allowing two hits and striking out one. The seven pitchers out of the Transylvania bullpen combined for seven innings pitched, allowing only one run on six hits while striking out four.
Tim Bauman, Evan Rhea, and Adam Clark each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
The Colonels are scheduled to return to action Saturday, May 3 as they host Manchester for senior day doubleheader at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky. First pitch of game one is set for 1 pm.
