Centre stops slide, defeats Defiance 23-5
The Centre College baseball team won its first game of the season after losing its first four games by defeating visiting Defiance College, 23-5, on Friday, March 6, in Danville, Ky.
After falling down two runs in the second inning, the Colonels responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 4-2. The Colonels then opened the floodgates scoring 19 more runs in the game's last seven innings.
On the mound, freshman David Myers (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the start for the Colonels and pitched a solid four innings. Junior reliever Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) followed Myers and pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win.
At the plate the Colonels pounded out 23 runs on 18 hits. Defensively, the Colonels played their best game to date making only two errors to Defiance's nine errors. Senior Jeff Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 3 for 5 at the plate with 4 runs and 3 RBI's. Junior shortstop Steven Kull (Frankfort, Ky.) was 3 for 5 from the plate with 4 runs scored and 4 RBI's.
The Colonels look to build off the win against visiting Earlham College on Saturday, March 7, at home. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
