Team Black jumps out to a 1-0 lead in Cols' World Series

In the opening game of the Fifth Annual Cols' World Series, Team Black used a four-run fourth inning on its way to a 6-1 win over Team Gold to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the series Saturday, Oct. 24 in Danville, Ky.

Freshman Mike Conley (Flatgap, Ky.) opened the game with a single off of sophomore pitcher David Myers (Cincinnati, Ohio) and would later score an unearned run on a fielding error to give Team Gold and early 1-0 lead.

In the third, junior Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) doubled to start the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Zeke Edwards (Harrodsburg, Ky.) to tie the game at one apiece.

Following a scoreless fourth by Team Gold, Team Black got to starting pitcher Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) in the bottom of the inning. Crowdis, again started the inning with a hit. Sophomore Jordan Ellis (Crestwood, Ky.) followed with a single.

Herbert then got a strikeout for the first out of the inning, but freshman Ian Powell (Harrodsburg, Ky.) notched an infield single to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Matt Waldman (Lexington, Ky.) then doubled down the left field line scoring two runs for a 3-1 lead.

Herbert struck out the next batter for out number two, but freshman Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) singled to score two more runs and give Team Black a 5-1 lead.

Crowdis would single again in the fifth inning and later score his third run of the game on a two-out single by Edwards to push the lead to 6-1.

Myers tossed six innings and allowed only the one unearned run on only three hits while striking out five and walking only one to earn the win. Herbert threw 4.2 innings and allowed six runs - five earned - on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks for the loss.

Sophomore Wade Taylor (Beaver Dam, Ky.) threw a scoreless seventh for Team Black and struck out two, both looking, to end the game.

Ammann, Waldman and Edwards finished the game with two runs batted in each, while Crowdis finished three for three with three runs scored. Conley went two for three for Team Gold and scored a run in the defeat.

The two teams will return to action Sunday, Oct. 25 for game two of the series. Team Gold will look to sophomore pitcher Ben Lause (Mason, Ohio) to even the series, while Team Black will counter with sophomore Brian Bascom (Cincinnati, Ohio). Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
