8-1 win gives Team Black a 2-1 series lead after three games

Although only recording three hits on the day, Team Black took advantage of several walks and hit batters to post an 8-1 in in game three and take a 2-1 lead in the Fifth Annual Cols' World Series Monday, Oct. 26 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.

Team Gold scored a run in the first inning for the third consecutive game when senior Steven Kull (Frankfort, Ky.) singled with two outs to score sophomore Jacob Plummer (Catlettsburg, Ky.) from second base for an early 1-0 lead.

Team Black evened the game at one in the top of the second when freshman Jonathan Lopez (West Liberty, Ky.) drew a two-out bases-loaded walk and took the lead in the top of the third when junior Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) scored on a single by freshman Alex Elswick (Lexington, Ky.).

The score remained that way until the top of the fifth when Team Black plated four runs without a hit in the inning to take a 6-1 lead.

Freshman Zeke Edwards (Harrodsburg, Ky.) drove in the final two runs of the game with a two-run home run to right center field, the first home run of the series for either team.

Crowdis earned the win for Team Black tossing four innings and allowing one earned run on three hits. The junior only walked one while striking out three. Lopez earned the save in relief throwing three scoreless and hitless innings. Lopez struck out three and did not walk anybody.

Sophomore Nate Lambert took the loss going four innings and allowing two runs. Lambert only allowed two hits, but walked six and struck out seven.

Crowdis and sophomore Jordan Ellis (Crestwood, Ky.) scored two runs each for Team Black, while Edwards scored three runs and drove in two more.

Plummer scored the lone run and had one of the three hits in the defeat for Team Gold.

After a day, off the five-game series will resume Wednesday, Oct. 28. Team Black will look to win the series behind starting pitcher Joe Nash (Elizabethtown, Ky.), while Team Gold will look to force a game five behind Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.). Start time is set for 4:45 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
