Basham drives in three, Team Gold forces game five
Needing a win to extend the series, senior Justin Basham (Bowling Green, Ky.) drove in three runs and Team Gold defeated Team Black 3-1 in game four of the 5th Annual Cols' World Series, Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
Freshman Alex Elswick (Lexington, Ky.) led off the top of the second with a walk for Team Black. The freshman outfielder stole second base and then stole third base after the first out of the inning was made. Senior pitcher Aaron Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) induced a ground out, but sophomore Matt Waldman (Lexington, Ky.) hit a two-out single to score Elswick and give Team Black a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Basham hit the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to tie the game at one apiece.
One inning later, Basham came to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second. The senior pulled one down the right field line for a two-run, two-out triple to give Team Gold a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore Ben Lause (Mason, Ohio) came on in the top of the fifth and earned the save by throwing a scoreless inning and force a game five.
As to not put any pitcher's in a position to get hurt, the two teams played a five-inning game in game four and will do the same in game five.
Herbert earned the win for Team Gold tossing four innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Lause earned the save after winning game two. Sophomore David Myers (Cincinnati, Ohio) suffered the loss for Team Black after winning game one of the series. Myers allowed three hits and two earned runs in two innings with one walk.
Basham was the lone player on either team to record multiple hits as the senior finished the game two for two with a three runs driven in and a run scored. Junior Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.) and sophomores Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) and Jacob Plummer (Catlettsburg, Ky.) had a hit each for Team Gold with Fishman scoring a run.
Waldman and fellow sophomore Jordan Ellis (Crestwood, Ky.) along with freshmen Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) and Zeke Edwards (Harrodsburg, Ky.) had a hit each for Team Black.
The two teams will return to action Thursday, Oct. 29 for the final game of the series and final day of the fall season. Team Gold will look to Lause to get the team off to a good start, while Team Black will counter with sophomore Brian Bascom (Cincinnati, Ohio). |
