Greg Mason
Head Coach

Greg Mason, a 1994 Centre graduate, has climbed to second place in all-time wins in Centre history in only his eighth year. His career record of 143-68 represents the highest winning percentage (68%) in school history. It is also the highest winning percentage among all active SCAC men's basketball coaches. Mason’s up-tempo style of play has helped the Colonels break 18 school records and 12 conference records during his stint as head coach.

In the 2006-07 season, Mason was named SCAC Coach-of-the-Year as well as NABC South Region Coach-of-the-Year, leading his team to a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

An All-SCAC guard at Centre, Mason scored 1,082 points (20th all-time) and dished out 374 assists (fifth all-time). He had held, at the time of his graduation, seven school records, and he continues to currently hold school records for most three-pointers in a career (244) and best three-point percentage in a single season (51.6). During Mason’s four years as a starter, Centre posted a 64-37 record, with three conference championships and an NCAA appearance in 1992. The three conference championships were part of a remarkable 11 straight the Colonels won between 1983 and 1993.

Along with his school records, Mason also still ranks highly in several SCAC categories, including single-season assists average, three-point field goals made, three-point field goals made per game, and three-point field goal percentage. The Centre alum also ranks near the top in conference history for a career in free throw percentage, three-point field goal percentage and career three-point field goals made.

During his seven years as head coach at Centre, Mason has coached 19 all-SCAC selections, including the 2005 SCAC Player-of-the-Year and second team All-American Reggie Magnusson. He also coached the league and school career rebounding leader Coy Zerhusen. The Colonels have also had plenty of success as a team, reaching the SCAC Tournament Championship game in both 2003 and 2006, with the 2006 team ending the season ranked sixth in the NCAA South Region.

Under Mason, the Colonels also have excelled in the classroom. Over the last five years, the men’s basketball team has placed 32 players on the SCAC Academic Honor Roll. In 2006 alone, Centre put 10 of its 15 men’s basketball players (67%) on the Honor Roll, tying for the most of any SCAC school.

Prior to becoming head coach at Centre, Mason was an assistant at Division II power Kentucky Wesleyan for a year before returning to Centre as an assistant for three seasons. While at Kentucky Wesleyan, Mason worked with two National Coaches of the Year, Wayne Boultinghouse and current coach Ray Harper.

James Booker begins his fourth season at his alma mater after completing a standout four-year career in which he scored 850 points. In Booker’s two years as an assistant coach, the Colonels have posted a 39-15 (72%) record. His responsibilities include working with the perimeter players, recruiting, film exchange, and scouting, as well as various other administrative duties.

As a senior at Centre, Booker was an all-SCAC second team selection. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as well as earning MVP honors in the Papa John’s/Country Hearth Inn Tournament that same year. Booker was named Centre’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2003-04 school year. During his four years as a player, Centre posted a four-year record of 66-37 (64%). A three-year starter for the men’s basketball team, Booker was also a two-time SCAC Academic Honor Roll selection.

Booker was also a four-year letter-winner in track & field at Centre. He earned all-SCAC accolades 10 times for his performances in the 100 and 200-meter sprints, as well as the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In 2003, he was the SCAC champion in the 200-meter dash and a member of two relay teams which currently hold school records. Booker is a Louisville native, where he attended Manual High School.
