The Centre College men's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games defeating Austin College 84-60 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Jan. 12 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC, while Austin falls to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in league action. Centre's current winning streak is its longest since a nine-game streak at the end of the 2004-05 season.
The Colonels jumped out to an 11-2 lead to open the game, but Austin fought back cutting the lead to three points (11-8) with 11:07 left in the first half. Sophomore guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) then scored the next four points of the game to spark a 15-2 run giving Centre a 26-10 lead. Austin trimmed the lead to seven points at the half and would enter the locker room down 33-26.
The second half was all Centre as the Colonels opened the half with a 22-8 run to push the lead to 55-34. The lead would grow to as many as 27 before ending in an 84-60 Centre win.
The Colonels finished the game shooting 54.8% (34-62) on the evening including 60.6% (20-33) in the second half. Centre also out rebounded the Kangaroos 41-30 in the win.
Senior forward Matt Jacobson (Lagrange, Ky.) led all scorers with 15 points on six of 10 shooting from the floor. Jacobson also grabbed seven rebounds to tie senior center John Patterson (Lexington, Ky.) for the game-high. Junior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) also finished in double figures with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Centre will next host Hendrix College, Sunday, Jan. 14 as part of a men's/women's double header. Tip-off for the SCAC contest is set for 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
