For the second time this season, Centre College junior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, Jan. 1 through Sunday, Jan. 7.
Nestheide led Centre to two SCAC road victories last week, averaging 26.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the two games. In the Colonels' 76-57 win over Oglethorpe, Nestheide scored a game-high 26 points with three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Two days later in an 80-68 win over Sewanee, he scored a season-high 27 points with three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Nestheide had one of his best shooing weekends of the year, making 16 of his 24 attempts (66.7%) from the floor, including eight of 14 (57.1%) from beyond the three-point line and 13 of 17 (76.5%) from the charity stripe.
The two games were his third and fourth 20+ efforts of the year and his 27 points were only two points shy of his career-high of 29, which he set last year. Currently, Nestheide leads Centre averaging 16.6 points (sixth in the SCAC), 3.9 assists (second in the SCAC) and 1.4 steals per game (13th in the SCAC).
Nestheide was also selected co-Player-of-the-Week back in week one and is the second Centre player to earn the award in as many weeks. Senior forward Matt Jacobson (Lagrange, Ky.) was the Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week a week ago.
Centre, now 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC, will look to extend its six-game winning streak Friday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Austin College. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
