Centre College junior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) has been named a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men's Basketball Co-Player-of-the-Week for games played from Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19.
Nestheide, a 6-0, 170-pound guard, led the Colonels to two season-opening wins and was named the MVP of the Pepsi/Sodexho Invitational Tournament, hosted by Berea College.
The junior guard averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the two-day tournament. In Centre's 84-60 win over Virginia-Wise, Nestheide scored 14 points and had seven assists. One day later, he returned to score a game-high 26 points with four rebounds, four assists and three steals in an 82-66 win over Berea in the championship game.
For the tournament, Nestheide made nine of his 18 shots (50.0%), including four of nine (44.4%) from long distance and 18-23 (78.3%) from the free throw line, while averaging 34 minutes per game.
Nestheide, who had earned Co-Player-of-the-Week honors once as a freshman, becomes the first Centre player to be selected since 2005 graduate Reggie Magnusson was chosen twice last year.
Oglethorpe University's Andrew Tulowitzky was also named a Co-Player-of-the-Week after averaging 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals in leading the Petrels to two wins to start the season. Centre returns to action, Tuesday, Nov. 21 when it travels to Maryville, Tenn. to play Maryville College. The Fighting Scots are ranked 23rd in the preseason D3hoops.com poll.
