Junior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) scored his 1,000th career-point and the Centre College men's basketball team toppled Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)-leading DePauw University 73-41, Saturday, Feb. 3, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which fell to DePauw 73-67 in Greencastle, Ind., earlier in the year, improve to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the SCAC, while the Tigers, which entered the game as the top team in the conference, fall to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in league play. With the win, the Colonels also remain undefeated at home with a 10-0 record.
With 13:40 left in the first half and Centre trailing 7-5, Nestheide hit his second lay-up of the game to give him career-points 1000 and 1001. The basket was part of a 16-0 run by the Colonels, which included 10 points from freshman Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell).
DePauw cut the lead to seven points (23-16) with 1:39 left in the half, but the Colonels scored the final four points of the half to take a 27-16 lead into the locker room. The Centre defense limited the Tigers to 16 points on 21.4% (6-28) shooting in the first half, marking DePauw's lowest single-half output of the season.
The second has was all Centre, as the Colonels opened the second frame with a 12-5 run to push the lead to 21 points (42-21) with 13:24 left to play. The lead would grow to as many as 34 points, before ending in a 73-41 Centre win.
Nestheide, who finished with 12 points on four of six shooting, is only the 24th player in Centre men's basketball history and only the 63rd player in SCAC history to scored 1,000 points in a career. He is the second Centre player in as many years to accomplish the feat. Former Colonel Reggie Magnusson joined the 1,000 point club last year.
Joining Nestheide in double figures was Noll, who finished with a team-high 13 points off the bench on five of seven shooting. Seniors Matt Jacobson (Lagrange, Ky.), John Patterson (Lexington, Ky.) and Stuart Rutledge (Paintsville, Ky.) added nine points apiece with Patterson also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.
Austin Brown was the lone DePauw Tiger in double figures, finishing with 14 points on four of 13 shooting. Reid Sakel added nine points and three steals in the defeat.
Centre will go back on the road, traveling to Sherman, Texas, Friday, Feb. 9 to play Austin College. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will tip-off at 8 p.m. CST. |
