Colonels win streak halted by Millsaps 79-67
The Centre College men's basketball team had its 10-game winning streak halted with a 79-67 loss to Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) contest, Friday, Jan. 26, in Jackson, Miss.
The Colonels, which had not lost a game since a 73-67 loss to DePauw, fall to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in the SCAC, while Millsaps improves to 12-6 overall and ties DePauw for first place in the conference with a 7-1 league mark.
Sophomore forward T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) hit a jumper to give Centre a 2-0 lead to open the game, but it would be the last time the Colonels would lead. Trailing 15-14 with 9:15 left in the first half, the Majors went on a 12-3 run to take a 27-17 lead at the 4:35 mark. Millsaps' Edrick Montgomery hit a jumper with 0:04 left in the half to give the Majors a 10-point lead (34-24) at the break.
Centre did not have an answer in the second half as Millsaps led by double figures all but the first 6:56 of the half. The Majors led by as many as 19 points (57-38) before finishing with the 12-point victory.
Centre shot 44.9% (22-49) for the game, but allowed Millsaps to shoot slightly better at 46.6% (27-58). The Majors also forced five more turnovers (17-12) in notching its seventh league win.
Five players scored in double figures for the host team led by Montgomery's game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Deonte Oscar scored 12 points off the bench. Lorenzo Bailey scored 11 points and had four steals and Rodney Rogan and Blake Martinez added 10 points apiece.
Thomason paced Centre with 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) was the only other Colonel in double figures scoring 14 points in 32 minutes of action. Centre will look to get back into the win column, Sunday, Jan. 28, when it travels to Memphis, Tenn. to play Rhodes College. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 1 p.m. CST. |
