After losing on a last-second half-court shot one year ago, the Centre College men's basketball team will return to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament Championship as the Colonels defeated Millsaps College 75-59 in a semifinal game, Saturday, Feb. 24, in Memphis, Tenn.
Centre would jump out to a 16-9 lead five minutes into the first half and never look back. Millsaps would make a run late in the first half to pull within three, but that is as close as they would come to the Colonels. The half would end with a two minute scoring drought by each team and the Colonels would take a 35-31 advantage into the locker room.
The second half would start with both teams battling for the lead. The Majors of Millsaps would tie the game at 35-35 two minutes into the second half and would keep themselves within three points of Centre until the 9:31 mark when Thomas Britt would hit a three pointer to take a four point advantage. From this point on the Colonels would go on an 11-1 run that would take the game down to its final two minutes.
Leading the way for the Colonels was junior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, KY) who shot 4-7 from the field and ended with 14 points and five assists. Adding to the offensive effort were junior Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, KY) and senior John Patterson (Lexington, KY) who each ended with 12 points. Nestheide would contribute four assists while Patterson would block five shots.
