The 2006-07 season will continue for the Centre College men's basketball team as the Colonels defeated Trinity University 72-57 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament Championship, Sunday, Feb. 25, in Memphis, Tenn.
Continuing their SCAC domination the Centre College Colonels would come out of the gate strong, running up a 40-28 half time advantage. The first five minutes of the half would see some back and forth play until SCAC Player-of-the-Year Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) would hit a three pointer to send the Colonels up 11-8. This would begin an 16-8 point run by the Colonels; from this point on Centre would control every aspect of the game.
The second half began much like the first half ended, with Centre in control. The Tigers of Trinity would come within 8 of the Colonels twice, at the 13:46 mark and again with 10:35 left to play in the second half. However, this is as close as Trinity would come to tasting victory as the Colonels would eventually go on to win by 15 points, 72-57.
The top scorers for the Colonels were junior Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, KY) who would end with 31 points and four assists and senior Matt Jacobson (LaGrange, KY) who would pile in 16 points. Complete Box Score
With the win the Centre Colonels will receive an automatic bid for 2007 Men's NCAA Division III Tournament. This will be the Colonels first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1992.
