Senior guards named CoSIDA Academic All-Region

Centre College senior basketball players Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) and Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) have been selected by the College of Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Basketball Team for their efforts both on the court and in the classroom.

Britt and Nestheide, who were both named to the District 4 College Division Second Team, have led the men's basketball team this season to a No. 5 ranking in the national polls and a 20 game consecutive win streak dating back to the second game of the season. This award is a tribute not only to the seniors' accomplishments on the court, but in the classroom as well.

Britt holds honors on the court to go along with his his academic achievements. Last year Britt led the Colonels in free throw percentage (86.3 %) and was voted Centre's Top Defensive Player in 2007. He has been named to the SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll three times as well as being on the Dean's List the past three semesters. Britt is also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a National Leadership Honor Society.

Britt, a three-year starter for the Colonels, is having a superb year averaging 15.6 points per game along with 2.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.6 steals. He was selected SCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week (Jan. 21- Jan. 27) after a career high 31 point performance in an overtime victory against Millsaps. Britt was also named the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Tournament MVP for his efforts in the December tournament.

Nestheide has also amassed numerous awards over his career as a Colonel. A four-year starter, Nestheide won the SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year award and was named a member of the Second Team All-SCAC basketball team in 2005. Following a great freshman campaign, he was named to both the Third Team All-SCAC basketball team and the SCAC All-Tournament Team in 2006. Last year, Nestheide was named the SCAC Player of the Year and SCAC Tournament MVP, as well as being selected to the First-Team All South Region team and the Academic All-South District team.

Off the court, Nestheide's accomplishments are equally impressive. He has been on the Dean's List for five semesters and the SCAC Academic Honor Roll three times. Like Britt, Nestheide is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. He is also a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, an International Honor Society for Economics.

This year Nestheide has continued his stellar play averaging 12.2 points, 4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and one steal per game. He was also named the SCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played between Nov. 26 and Dec. 2.

Led by Britt and Nestheide, the Colonels will look to set a new conference record by extending their win streak to 21 consecutive games as they travel to DePauw University Saturday, Feb. 16 for a conference road game. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 3 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
