Centre men cruise to 63-46 win over Birmingham Southern
The No. 5 ranked Centre College men's basketball team continued its strong play and extended all three of its winning streaks by defeating Birmingham Southern College 63-46 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Friday, Feb. 8 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels have now won 19 straight games this season, 24 straight games at home and 19 straight games against league opponents, while improving to 19-1 overall. The loss drops Birmingham Southern to 12-9 on the year.
Centre jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Leading by two points (10-8) at the 14:21 mark in the first half, the Colonels scored nine straight points to extend the lead to 11 (19-8).
The Panthers pulled within six points (23-17) later in the half, but Centre answered with nine of the final 13 points in the opening frame to take a 32-21 lead into the locker room.
That lead continued to grow in the second half as the Colonels pushed the lead to as many as 29 points (59-30) before finishing with the 17-point victory.
Centre shot 43.4% (23-53) from the field including 10 of 23 from beyond the three-point arc, while Birmingham Southern finished at 32.7% (18-55) overall and 29.4% (5-17) from behind the arc.
Senior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) led all scorers with 15 points on a perfect shooting night. Britt made all five of his shots from the field, including both three-point attempts and all three free throw attempts in 24 minutes of action.
Junior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) and sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) added 13 points apiece, with Noll also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.
Aaron Parr and Daniel Hudson scored 11 points each to pace the Panthers, while Roger Williams chipped in 10 points with eight rebounds off the bench.
Centre will look to continue all three-winning streaks Sunday, Feb. 10 against Rhodes College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 3 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
