Winning streaks continue for Centre men with 69-59 win
The Centre College men's basketball team continued to roll extending all three of its winning streaks defeating Hendrix College 69-59 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Jan. 27 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which have now won 16 straight games this season, and 23 straight home games dating back to last season, improved to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the SCAC. Centre has also now won 16 straight games over SCAC opponents including conference tournament games in 2006-07. The loss drops Hendrix to 10-7 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the early going, taking almost four minutes to score the game's first field goal. The Colonels scored 10 of the first 12 points and led by eight with 13:45 left in the opening period.
Hendrix chipped away at the lead, pulling within five points 19-14 with just over five minutes on the clock. Centre out-scored the Warriors 12-5 to end the half and take a 31-19 lead into the break.
Hendrix got out of the gates quickly in the second half using a 12-2 run to open the half and cut the lead to only two points (33-31). Following a Centre timeout, the Colonels responded with an 11-2 run to push the lead back to 11 points (44-33).
The lead grew to 14 points (49-35), but again, the Warriors made a run cutting the deficit to six points (56-50) with only 4:15 left to play. That was as close as Hendrix would get as the Colonels pushed the lead back to double figures before finishing with the 10-point win.
Centre shot 43.8% (21-48) from the field and forced 22 Hendrix turnovers, while the Warriors out-rebounded the Colonels 40-31, but shot only 33.9% (19-56) for the game.
Sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) posted his third 19-point effort of the season, connecting on seven of his 12 attempts, including four of his eight three-point attempts.
Senior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists and fellow senior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) followed up his 31-point effort Friday with 10 points, two assists and two steals.
Centre will look to extend its winning streaks Friday, Feb. 2 when it travels to San Antonio, Texas to play Trinity University. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 8 p.m. CST. |
