Britt posts career-high 31 points in overtime win
After scoring only three points in the first half, senior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) scored 28 points in the second half and overtime period combined, including an off-balance last-second three-pointer to force the extra period as the No. 14 Centre College men's basketball team defeated No. 18 Millsaps College 90-80 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Jan. 25 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which have now won 15 straight games this season and 22 straight home games dating back to last year, improve to 15-1 overall and are now the last unbeaten team in the SCAC at 7-0. They have also now won 15 straight games over SCAC opponents dating back to last year and including the conference tournament. Millsaps, which was the last conference team to defeat Centre, falls to 15-2 overall and 7-1 in league action.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first 8:55, but with the scored tied at 15, the Majors went on a 16-2 run to take a 31-17 lead with 5:31 left to play in the opening period.
Centre answered with a run of its own, outscoring Millsaps 15-1 to tie the game at 32 apiece with 1:18 on the clock. The Majors hit a free throw with five seconds left in the half and took a 33-32 lead into the locker room at the break.
After trading baskets early in the second half, Centre led 46-42 with 13:52 to play. Millsaps scored 12 of the next 14 points and regained a six-point lead 54-48 with just under 10 minutes left.
The Colonels battled back to tie the game at 54, only to see the Majors go back in front and push the lead to seven points (71-64) with only 0:42 left on the clock.
Britt knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to four, but Millsaps' Lorenzo Bailey hit two free throws to make it a six-point game. Britt followed with another three-pointer to cut the lead to three points and then fellow senior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) stole the ball and found junior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) for a lay-up to pull within one point (73-72) with 0:14 left.
The Majors Chad Songy hit two free throws to push the lead back to three, but with the clock winding down, Britt found a way to get an off-balance three-point shot off from the top of the key and nailed it with 0:00.3 second on the clock. The inbounds pass was knocked away and the game went to overtime.
The extra period was all Centre as Britt connected on two-three pointers early to give the Colonels a six-point lead (81-76). Millsaps missed all eight of their three-point attempts, while Centre made nine of its 12 free throw-attempts to seal the win.
The Colonels struggled to hit shots for much of the first half, but managed to finish the game at 40.6% (26-64) for the game, including 12 of 36 (33.3%) from the three-point line and 26 of 33 (78.8%) from the charity stripe.
Millsaps shot 56.0% (14-25) in the first half and 59.3% (16-27) in the second half, but made only two of its 12 attempts (16.7%) in overtime to finish at 50.0% (32-64).
Britt, who came up one point shy of setting a career-high earlier this season, left no doubt this time scoring 31 points on seven of 14 shooting from the field, including seven of 12 from beyond the three-point arc and 10 of 11 from the free throw line in 35 minutes of action.
Sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) played a big part in the first half comeback and finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Nestheide scored 13 points and had six assists and three steals, while Thomason added 12 points and five rebounds before fouling out at the end of regulation.
Edrick Montgomery led all scorers with 34 points on 14 of 19 shooting and also added a game-high 13 rebounds. Rodney Rogan tallied 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Bailey finished with 13 points.
