Men earn second SCAC win to improve to 9-1
After a close start to the game the Centre College men's basketball team went on a 25-5 run and never looked back to easily defeat Oglethorpe University 80-68 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Jan. 4 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC. They also extended their overall winning streak to nine games and home winning streak to 20 games. Oglethorpe falls to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Trailing by two points (12-10) early in the first half, Centre used the 25-5 run to go ahead 35-17 with 6:08 left to play in the first period. Oglethorpe cut the lead to nine points (40-31) just before the half, only to see the Colonels scored the final five points of the half to take a 45-31 lead into the locker room.
Centre opened the second half on a 14-4 run to push the lead to 61-33 and went on to extend the lead to as many as 29 points, before finishing with a 12-point victory over the Stormy Petrels.
The Colonels shot 50.0% (30-60) for the game, including 10 of 25 (40.0%) from the three-point line and 10 of 13 (76.9%) from the charity stripe. Oglethorpe finished the game 25 of 60 (41.7%), including seven of 18 (38.9%) from the three-point arc and 11 of 15 (73.3%) from the free throw line.
Junior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) led all scorers with his second 20+ point effort. Thomason scored 26 points and missed only two shots in 12 attempts.
Senior guards Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) an Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) added 12 points and three rebounds apiece, with Nestheide also contributing five assists.
Joe Kennedy and Alex Richey scored 13 points each to lead Oglethorpe. Richey also had four rebounds and three steals off the bench, while Kennedy added four steals. Ahmad Kareem Shaheed chipped in 10 points.
Centre will return to action Sunday, Jan. 6 to host Sewanee-University of the South. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 3 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
