Men's Basketball News

In the final regular season home game for two seniors, the No. 5 ranked Centre College men's basketball team extended three winning streaks and tied a conference record by defeating Rhodes College 85-63 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Feb. 10 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, now 20-1 overall and 11-0 in the SCAC, have now won 20 straight games to match the league record for most consecutive wins set by the 1991-92 Rhodes' team. Centre also extended its home winning streak to 25 straight games as well as its winning streak over SCAC opponents to 20 games. The loss drops the Lynx to 8-14 overall and 3-9 in league action.

The game was tightly contested in the early going, but with the scored tied 17apiece at the 12:22 mark, the Colonels scored 17 unanswered points to take a 34-17 lead with 7:17 left to play in the opening period.

Rhodes did not have an answer as Centre finished the half shooting 51.4% (18-35) from the floor to take a 49-29 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Colonels' lead continued to grow in the second half as Centre extended the lead to as many as 28 points (83-55), before finishing with the 24-point victory.

Sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Thomas, Ky.) had a big day recording his second career double-double with a career-high 23 points, including 21 in the first half, and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Noll hit nine of his 16 shot attempts, including two of five from beyond the three-point arc, and all three free throw attempts.

Senior guards Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) and Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) both finished in double figures in their final regular season home games. Nestheide scored 15 points with five rebounds and two steals, while Britt notched 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore center Ross Herman (Louisville, Ky.) also posted a career-high with 11 points in the victory.

Cory Smith led three Lynx in double figures scoring 13 points on four of eight shooting. Reid Hamilton tallied 12 points and Nathan Ollie added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Centre will look to set a new conference record Saturday, Feb. 16 with a conference road game against DePauw University. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 3 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
