Colonels extend winning streak to 12 games
Trailing by one point at halftime, the Centre College men's basketball team rallied to out score Rhodes College 50-42 in the second half to defeat the Lynx 84-77 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Jan. 13 in Memphis, Tenn.
The win extends the Colonels winning streak to 12 games and ups their overall record to 12-1, while remaining unbeaten in SCAC play at 4-0. The loss drops Rhodes to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in league action.
Trailing 21-19 at the 9:13 mark in the opening frame, Centre scored nine unanswered points to go ahead 28-21. The Lynx responded by closing out the half with a 14-6 run to take a 35-34 lead at the break.
Rhodes led by one point (44-43) early in the second half, but the Colonels used a 13-2 run to take a 56-46 lead with 12:03 left to play. The Lynx pulled within three points (73-70) with just under three minutes left, but would get no closer as Centre hung on for the seven-point victory.
The Colonels continued their hot shooing finishing with a 50.0% shooting percentage or better for the fourth straight game. Centre made 29 of its 52 attempts (55.8%) and out rebounded Rhodes 30-23, while the Lynx finished the game at 44.8% (30-67).
Senior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) posted his third 20+ game in the last five contests, scoring 22 points on eight of 12 shooting. Junior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) tallied his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) and sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) added 12 points apiece.
Nathan Ollie led the Lynx with 20 points. Cory Smith scored 15 points and had four assists. Reid Hamilton tallied 14 points and Joe Thompson chipped in 11 points in the defeat.
Centre will be back in action Friday, Jan. 18 against Austin College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 8 p.m. CST in Sherman, Texas.
