Colonels complete perfect SCAC season with 82-50 win
The Centre College men's basketball team became the first team in the history of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) to post a perfect season in league play by defeating Sewanee-University of the South 82-50, Sunday, Feb. 24 in Sewanee, Tenn.
The second-ranked Colonels, which have now won 23 straight games overall and 23 straight games against SCAC opponents improve to 23-1 overall and finish league play at 14-0. Sewanee, falls to 7-18 overall and 1-13 in the SCAC.
Centre wasted little time taking control of the game out-scoring the Tigers 29-7 over the first 8:36 of the first half. The Colonels pushed the lead to as many as 24 points (37-13), before Sewanee scored the final eight points to cut the lead to 37-21 at the break.
The second half was much like the first as Centre pushed the lead back to 20 points within the first 1:49. The Colonels continued to dominate extending the lead to as many as 39 points (81-42) in the second half before ending the game with a 32-point victory.
Centre shot 47.8% (32-67) on the day and posted a season-low five turnovers. Sewanee shot 36.7% (18-49) and committed 14 turnovers in the loss.
Sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) led three Colonels in double figures with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes of action. Fellow sophomore centre Ross Herman (Louisville, Ky.) scored a career-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds and senior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) added 12 points in the win.
Ben Pursell posted game-highs in both points with 18 and rebounds with 13. Gary Grizzle was the only other Tiger to finish in double figures, scoring 12 points in the loss.
Centre will now prepare for the SCAC Tournament, Friday-Sunday, Feb. 29-March 3 in Conway, Ark.
