Colonels dominate Sewanee to remain perfect in league play

The Centre College men's basketball team remained unbeaten in conference play cruising to an 85-68 win over Sewanee-University of the South in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) contest Sunday, Jan. 6 in Danville, Ky.

Centre has now won 10 straight games this season and 21 straight at home overall to improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCAC. Sewanee falls to 5-7 and remains winless in league play at 0-3.

The game was tightly played throughout the first 10 minutes of action with Sewanee holding a one-point lead (17-15) at the 10:01 mark. That was the last lead the Tigers saw as the Colonels scored 16 unanswered points and 29 of the final 33 points of the half to take a 44-21 lead at halftime.

Centre lead by at least 20 points for most of the second half, including by as many as 29 on two different occasions before finishing with the 17-point conference victory.

The Colonels shot a season-best 58.3% (35-60), including making 13 of their 25 (52.0%) three-point attempts. Sewanee shot 45.0% (27-60), making nine of 22 from beyond the three-pont arc.

Four players scored in double figures for Centre, led by senior Thomas Britt 's (Louisville, Ky.) 22 points on eight of 11 shooting. Britt also had four steals and two rebounds in the win.

Sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tied his season and career-high with 19 points on eight of 12 shooting, while also recording four rebounds and three assists.

Junior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) and senior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) scored in double figures as well with Thomason posting 13 points and four rebounds, while Nestheide had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Ben Pursell led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers. Gary Grizzle scored 12 points and Bradley Pierson chipped in 11 points in the defeat.

Up next for Centre is a trip to Birmingham, Ala. to play Birmingham Southern College. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. CST.
