Colonels earn hard-fought win over Thomas More
In an extremely physical contest, the Centre College men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 71-56 non-conference victory over Thomas More College Tuesday, Dec. 18 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels have now won five straight games to improve to 5-1 overall, while Thomas More falls to 5-4 overall on the season.
Junior forward T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) put back a missed lay up attempt for the first points of the game and Centre would not look back, leading the entire game.
Leading 19-13 at the 8:57 mark in the first half, the Colonels went on a 8-1 run to push the lead to 27-14 with less than two minutes in the half. The lead remained at 13 at the break with Centre ahead 32-19.
The Colonels extended the lead to 19 points (54-35) over midway through the second half and would lead by as many as 24 points before finishing with the 15-point win.
The two teams combined for 41 fouls on the night including several technical fouls, with only one being committed by Centre. The Colonels shot 40.0% (20-50) on the evening, while the Saints shot only 32.8% (20-61) in the loss.
Sophomore forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) led four Colonels in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Matt Nestheide (Edgewood, Ky.) had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Thomason posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) also added 10 points.
The Saints' Mark Tinklenberg scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Tinklenberg made 10 of his 18 shots from the field, including four of his 10 three-point attempts.
Centre will return to action Thursday, Dec. 20 for a non-conference match up with in-state rival Transylvania University. The contest is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lexington, Ky. |
