Guilford defeats Averett, 91-81
In the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament Guilford College defeated Averett University, 91-81, at host on Centre College in Danville, Ky., on Saturday, March 7.
The lead changed hands twelve times in the first half as neither team was able to secure a lead. At halftime Guilford led Averett by one, 42-41. In the first half Averett's bench outscored the Guilford bench, 18-0.
Guilford pulled away in the second half and did not relinquish the lead in route to the win. Guilford shot an impressive 30 for 54 (55.6%) from the field and out-rebounded Averett by 19, 44-25.
The leading scorer for Guilford was Rhett Bonner, who finished with 27 points. Four Guilford starters scored in double-figures. Averett player Jonathan Rumley finished with a game-high 29.
With the win Guilford College punches its ticket to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament "Sweet 16" and is now 23-5 on the year. Averett finishes the year 20-9.
