Colonels win SCAC first round game vs. Austin, 66-41
The #16 Centre College men's basketball team won its opening round game against Austin College, 66-41, on Friday, February 27, in the 2009 SCAC Basketball Tournament hosted by Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.
Centre, the number one seed from the SCAC Eastern Division, used a strong second half performance to over-power Austin College, the SCAC Western Division four seed, in the opening round SCAC game. It is the second time this season that the Colonels have defeated Austin College.
The Colonels scored the first points of the game thanks to a three-point field goal by junior forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) and never looked back. Centre did not trail Austin by a single point for the duration of the game. At half the Colonels led by seven, 24-17.
Centre opened the second half with a 17-5 run to put away the game. With the win the Colonels are now 21-4 overall while the loss drops Austin College to a final record of 13-13.
The Colonels played stifling defense all night limiting Austin College to a dismal 26.8% shooting percentage from the field. Centre also dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Austin College by nine, 41-32.
Noll finished the game with a game-high 26 points along with 8 rebounds. Sophomore center Alex Lloyd (Lexington, Ky.) finished the game with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
The Colonels return to action Saturday, February 28, against the winner of the Hendrix/Oglethorpe game. Centre's second round game is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
