Men's Basketball News

Men's basketball wins third straight with 69-59 victory

The Centre College men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in defeating Birmingham Southern College 69-59 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Sunday, Jan. 11 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, which have now won three-straight games, improve to 10-3 overall, while Birmingham Southern falls to 7-6 this season. The game will not count toward the conference standings because Birmingham Southern is in the second year of its four-year provisional transition from Division I to Division III.

Centre scored nine of the first 11 points and 17 of the first 22 points in jumping out to a 12-point lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The lead grew to 14 points (27-13), but an 11-2 run by the Panthers to close the half cut the lead to only five points (29-24) at the break.

Birmingham Southern scored the first two points of the second half to pull within three points (29-26), but that's as close as the score would be the in the second half as the Colonels used a 14-2 run to go ahead by 15 points (43-28).

The lead was cut to nine points (45-36) with 10:25 left to play, but Centre quickly pushed the lead back to double figures and finished the game with a 10-point win.

The Colonels shot 45.5% (25-55) on the day, while limiting the Panthers to only 38.3% (23-60). Centre also posted a 38-24 rebounding advantage in the win.

Four players scored in double figures for the Colonels, led by junior forward Danny Noll's (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) scored 15 points and senior guards Kris Bentley (Pikeville, Ky.) and Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) added 12 and 10 points respectively. Crowdis also added nine assists and four rebounds.

Aaron Parr led all scorers with 21 points for the Panthers. Roger Williams added nine points and five rebounds and Michael Rebarchak chipped in eight points.

Centre will return to action Friday, Jan. 16 with another SCAC contest against Colorado College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
