Centre continues streak, defeats Colorado 66-51
The Centre College men's basketball team continued its latest winning streak defeating Colorado College 66-51 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game for its fourth consecutive win Friday, Jan. 16 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC, while Colorado falls to 2-12 overall and 1-5 in league action.
The Tigers actually led for much of the first half. A jumper by Austin Perkins at the 11:03 mark in the first half put Colorado ahead by 10 points (19-9), but the Colonels would chip away, cutting the lead to three points (24-21) with 6:35 remaining in the opening period.
A Colorado basket extended the lead back to five, but Centre closed the half with a 17-3 run to take a 38-29 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Colonels did not look back. A three-pointer by junior forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) gave Centre a 13-point lead (46-33) with 13:31 left to play, and the lead would grow to as many as 23 points before the game ended in a 15-point victory for the Colonels.
Centre shot 42.9% (24-56) from the floor, including 12 of 24 (50.0%) from beyond the three-point arc, while limiting Colorado to only 36.8% (21-57) from the field and only five of 22 (22.7%) from the three-point line.
Noll paced the Colonels with a game-high 19 points on seven of 13 shooting, including five of six from the three-point line. He also added a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jeff Mullaney (Louisville, Ky.) added 14 points off the bench for Centre in 24 minutes of action.
Brady Ohlsen led Colorado with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jarell Sweet scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Nick Rose added 10 points and six rebounds in the defeat.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Jan. 17 with a home contest against Austin College. Prior to the game, Centre will honor the `88-'89 and `89-`90 women's final four teams as well as the `78-`79 and `88-`89 men's final four teams. Tip-off for the SCAC game is set for 8 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
