Colonels win thriller vs. Hendrix, 78-77
Thanks to two last second free throws by sophomore forward Chris Gowers (Louisville, Ky.) the # 16 Centre College men's basketball defeated Hendrix College, 78-77, in the second round of the 2009 SCAC Tournament on Saturday, February 28.
The game was a wire to wire thriller. The Colonels led by seven at half only to have Hendrix battle back and take the lead, 49-48, with 13:00 minutes to go in the game. The lead changed hands nineteen more times in the game's final thirteen minutes, including five lead changes in the game's final minute. The game's last twelve points all game from the free-throw line with the winning free-throws being shot by Gowers with 4.6 seconds left in the game.
For the game Centre was 26 for 50 (52.0%) from the field and out-rebounded Hendrix by seven, 28-21.
Three Centre starters finished the game in double figures. Senior point-guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) finished the game with a team-high 18 points while also recording 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Crowdis scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half. Junior forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) scored 15 points. Sophomore center Alex Lloyd (Lexington, Ky.) scored 10 points. The game's last second hero, Gowers, finished with 9 points, 6 in the second half, and 6 rebounds.
With the win over Hendrix Centre will play Southwestern in the SCAC Basketball Tournament Championship Game on Sunday, March 1, at 3:00 pm. Centre defeated Southwestern 73-63 earlier in the season.
With the win the Colonels improve to 22-4 on the year. Additionally, this is the fourth straight year that the Centre College men's basketball team has made it to the SCAC Championship game. The Colonels lost in 2006 and 2008 while winning the SCAC Tournament in 2007.
