Men's basketball team bounces back with 78-72 win
One day after having its five-game winning streak snapped, the Centre College men's basketball team bounced back defeating Maryville College for the second time this year, this time winning 78-72 on the second day of the 2008 Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Tournament hosted by Centre Tuesday, Dec. 30 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which won the earlier meeting between the two teams 73-71 in Maryville, Tenn., improve to 8-2 overall, while the Scots fall to 4-6 on the season.
The first half was tight throughout as the lead changed hands five times and was tied on four other occasions. Centre led by four (21-17) at the 7:08 mark for the biggest lead of the half, before going into the locker room with a 29-25 lead.
The Colonels led the entire second half going ahead by as many as 13 points (66-53). Down 10 points, Maryville cut the lead to six (72-66) with 0:51 left to play but would get no closer as Centre closed out the game for a 78-72 win.
The Colonels shot 46.0% (23-50) from the field on the evening, while Maryville finished at 40.9% (27-66).
Senior guard Kris Bentley (Pikeville, Ky.) led Centre with 22 points on seven of 10 shooting, including six of nine from beyond the three-point arc. Junior forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) finished with another big game scoring 21 points and grabbing five rebounds. Senior guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in 10 points and four assists, while sophomore forward Alex Lloyd (Lexington, Ky.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and blocked five shots.
Greg Hernandez led the Scots with 26 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Damron notched 11 points off the bench in the defeat.
Hanover College won the earlier game of the day, defeating Piedmont College 97-74. Mitchell Meyer led the Panthers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Piedmont was led by J.C. Herebia, who finished with 23 points and seven rebounds.
Herebia, Hernandez, Bentley, Noll and Hanover's Taylor Dial were each named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts. Meyer was named the Tournament MVP after leading Hanover to a 2-0 record.
Centre will return to action Sunday, Jan. 4 with a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) road contest against DePauw University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
