Centre defeats Millsaps, 59-56, on last second three-pointer
Thanks to a last second three-point field goal by freshman guard Jeff Mullaney (Louisville, Ky.) the Centre College men's basketball team defeated, the reigning SCAC tournament champion, Millsaps College, 59-56, on Sunday, Jan. 25, in Jackson, Miss.
The win improves the Colonels to 14-3 on the year and 7-1 in the SCAC. With the loss Millsaps drops to 5-13 on the season, 2-7 in the SCAC. The Colonels have now won six straight games against SCAC opponents.
For the second straight game the Colonels have rallied from a first half deficit. The Colonels struggled from the field in the first half only shooting 36.6% (9-26) and 0% (0-12) percent from beyond the three-point arc. Due to the poor shooting the Colonels went into halftime down seven to the Millsaps Majors.
The Colonels found their shooting touch in the second half, shooting 56.0% (14-25) from the field and 44.4% (8-18) from three-point territory. The game went down the wire as the Majors hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 56-56 with just :11 seconds to go. Mullaney entered the game after a Colonel timeout with :07 seconds left in the game and hit the game winning three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in the game.
Senior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) led the Colonels with a game-high 21 points and also added a team-high 8 rebounds. Mullaney finished the game with 9 points and 5 assists. Senior guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) continued his stellar play adding 6 points and 5 assists.
The Colonels return to action at home on Friday, Jan. 30, against SCAC opponent Southwestern. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
