Nestheide hired as men's basketball assistant coach

Following a successful career as a student-athlete, Matt Nestheide will continue to help his alma mater, having been hired as an assistant men's basketball coach at Centre College as announced by head coach Greg Mason.

Nestheide replaces another Centre graduate in James Booker, who became the head boy's basketball coach at Kentucky Country Day in Louisville, Ky. earlier this summer.

"I am truly excited to be a part of the coaching staff here at Centre College. I have the utmost respect for Coach Mason and the success he has brought to this program. I look forward to working with him and our student-athletes in order to continue the winning tradition that has been established at Centre College," Nestheide said.

The 2008 graduate experienced plenty of success as a student-athlete at Centre garnering several accolades. A four-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) selection, Nestheide was named the league's Player of the Year in 2007. Following his freshman season he was named the SCAC Newcomer of the Year and has been named to all-region teams as well as being named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll all four years.

After his senior season, in which he help lead the Colonels to their second straight SCAC title and a #2 national ranking, Nestheide shared the Centre Male Student-Athlete of the Year award with fellow teammate Thomas Britt.

"We are thrilled that Matt has decided to join our coaching staff.  Matt is one of the very best players in our school's history and he helped lead us to our back-to-back SCAC championships.  I now look forward to the impact Matt is going to have on our basketball program as a coach," Mason said.

Nestheide will be the 14th member of the Centre coaching staff to coach at his alma mater and will begin immediately.

"I have enjoyed watching Matt play so well the last four years and now will enjoy working with him to ensure our outstanding basketball tradition continues. He is a class act and I know he will be an asset to our department and the entire college," Brian Chafin, Centre Director of Athletics and Recreation, said.

The Colonels will look to defend their conference championship and make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament this fall.
