Centre drops tough game to Piedmont, 82-75
The #18 ranked Centre College men's basketball team returned from their holiday break to lose a tough home contest to visiting Piedmont, 82-75, on Monday, Dec. 29, in the night cap of the opening round of the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Classic.
The first half was tightly contested as the lead changed hands seven times. The Colonels played well to close the half to take a six point lead, 42-38, over Piedmont into the half. Junior forward Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) scored 17 points in the first half thanks to hot shooting from the outside. In the first half Noll was 5-8 from three-point range.
The Colonels held the lead until the seven minute mark of the second half when a pair of free throws gave Piedmont a lead they would not relinquish resulting in the Colonels' loss.
For the game the Colonels were 25-69 (36.2%) from the field while Piedmont shot 28-53 (52.8%) from the field. The loss drops the Colonels to 7-2 on the season. Piedmont has now won two straight games and improves to 3-7 on the season.
Noll led all Colonels in points scored with 23. Freshmen guard Jeff Mullaney (Louisville, Ky.) continued his strong play of late scoring 17 points off the bench. Senior forward T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) scored 12 points, had 8 rebounds, and 3 steals for the Colonels.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 30, against Maryville College in the second round of the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
In the first game of the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Classic Hanover College defeated Maryville, 69-61. Hanover took the lead over Maryville with thirteen minutes remaining in the game and never relinquished the lead to take the win. Hanover was led by the duo of Taylor Dial and Mitchell Meyer. Dial scored a team-high 22 points while Mitchell scored 21 points and recorded 12 rebounds. The leading scorer from Maryville was Jordan Damron with 17 points. Maryville center Greg Hernandez scored 11 points and posted 13 rebounds to record the double-double.
Hanover returns to action tomorrow against Piedmont at 5:00 pm in the second round of the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Classic. |
