Centre pounds Rhodes 87-50 in men's basketball

Coming off it's first conference loss of the season, the Centre College men's basketball team bounced back in a big way defeating Rhodes College 87-50 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Friday, Jan. 9 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC, while Rhodes falls to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in league action. Centre has now won the last seven meetings against the Lynx.

Rhodes' Nathan Ollie opened the game with a basket to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead, but that would be their last lead of the game. Centre scored the next 10 points to take a 10-2 lead with 16:16 left in the opening period.

With 11:20 on the clock Rhodes cut the lead to 17-13, but a 12-0 run by Centre pushed the lead to 29-13. The Colonels continued to control the action pushing the lead to as many as 22 (37-15) in the first half before entering the locker room with a 15-point lead (45-30).

The second half was all Centre as the Colonels led by 20 or more points for all but the first 1:24. Rhodes shot only 25.9% (7-27) in the second period and finished the game with 15 turnovers and a 33.3% (18-54) shooting percentage. Centre hit 30 of its 65 shot attempts to finish the game at 46.2% on the night.

Eleven different players scored at leas three points for the Colonels. Senior guard Kris Bentley (Pikeville, Ky.) led all scorers with 15 points, all on three-pointers. Sophomore center Alex Lloyd (Lexington, Ky.) scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds and freshman center James Melloan (Louisville, Ky.) added a season-high 10 points off the bench.

Cory Smith led the Lynx with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Andyshea Saberioon was the only other Rhodes' player to finish in double figures as he scored 12 points in the defeat.
