Men's basketball team defeats Southwestern 73-63

Playing without one of its regular starters, junior Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) stepped up his game and scored 28 points to help lead the Centre College men's basketball team to a 73-63 win over visiting Southwestern University, Friday, Jan. 30 in Danville, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels have now won seven straight games to improve to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Southwestern falls to 13-6 overall and 4-5 in league action.

The game did not start out well for Centre as the Pirates jumped out to a 21-9 lead with 11:28 to play in the first half. Southwestern led by 10 points with 1:12 remaining in the first half, but freshman guard Jeff Mullaney (Louisville, Ky.) knocked down a three-pointer and a jumper in the final minute to cut the lead in half (32-27).

The Colonels tied the game at the 16:19 mark in the second half and went ahead on a Mullaney jumper for the first time in the game at the 15:37 mark.

Southwestern went back ahead 41-40, but back-to-back three-pointers by Noll put Centre back in front for good. The Colonels went on to build a 13-point lead before finishing with the 10-point victory.

Noll led all scorers with a season-high 28 points on nine of 13 shooting, including making seven of his nine three-point attempts. The junior forward also had seven rebounds in 38 minutes of action.

Senior guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) had 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals and made all 10 of his free throw attempts, while Mullaney starting in place of injured T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists in his first career start.

Travis Barber was the only Southwestern player to finish in double figures. Barber scored 16 points in 25 minutes of action.

Centre will return to action Saturday, Jan. 31 against Trinity University. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
